Welcome to Fermented Facts!
Do you love wine, but find yourself skeptical of the constant hype and storytelling? Are you tired of fluffy opinion, exaggerated marketing, and romanticized vineyard myths that don’t quite add up? How about serious, independent wine writing turbo-charged with data, research, and a healthy dose of skepticism?
Fermented Facts brings an independent, data-driven lens to the world of wine. Don’t get me wrong: storytelling has a place. Wine is inherently cultural, historical, and personal; the stories of heritage and hard work are part of what makes a bottle special. But in an industry often dominated by groupthink and “pay-to-play” marketing, critical analysis and a fact-based foundation to the storytelling are just as vital.
My goal isn’t to strip the romance away from wine, but to ensure that the stories we tell are grounded in reality. We shouldn’t confuse the new generation of consumers with ever-changing “trends”, esoteric wisdom or artifical “us vs them setups”. If we want to be taken seriously, we need coherent messaging based on facts to back up our beauty.
Who am I?
I’m Jan Wrampelmeyer, econometrician by training with a PhD in Financial Economics. I spend my professional life publishing research papers, analyzing markets, identifying trends, and separating causal signals from random noise.
But I am also a serious wine lover. Wine is a hobby that got seriously out of hand, and I want to understand everything about it. I love the fact that the subject never stops—it encompasses geography, biology, history, politics , and more. And of course there is always a new producer, a forgotten vineyard or a new vintage to discover. That curiosity led me to win the Rhône Trophy for the best WSET Level 3 result in the EMEA region, and I am currently continuing that journey as a WSET Diploma student.
While I enjoy the tradition and craft of wine, my rational brain can’t help but ask critical questions when reading about the latest wine trends or marketing claims: Is this effect real? Is it significant? Or are we just looking at a lucky roll of the dice?
